CWC Report Warns of Increased Risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods in the Himalayan Region
CWC Report Warns of Increased Risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods in the Himalayan Region

A new report by the Central Water Commission (CWC) highlights a concerning trend in the Himalayan region, showing a 10.81% increase in the area of glacial lakes and other water bodies from 2011 to 2024. This growth is linked to climate change, raising the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).

    Key Points:

    • Increase in Glacial Lake Area: The total area of glacial lakes across the Himalayan region has increased from 5.33 lakh hectares (ha) in 2011 to 5.91 lakh ha in 2024, with India’s total inventory of glacial lakes growing by 33.7%.
    • High-Risk Lakes Identified: The report identifies 67 lakes in India that have expanded by over 40% in surface area, placing them in the high-risk category for potential GLOFs.
    • Regions at Risk: Significant expansion of glacial lakes has been observed in regions such as Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, indicating the need for enhanced monitoring and disaster preparedness.
    • Climate Change Impacts: The report attributes the rapid expansion of these lakes to increased glacier melting caused by rising temperatures, which could have severe consequences for downstream communities, infrastructure, and biodiversity.
    • Water Availability Concerns: The report also warns that the expansion of glacial lakes could impact water availability in major river systems like the Ganga, Brahmaputra, and Indus.
