A new report by the Central Water Commission (CWC) highlights a concerning trend in the Himalayan region, showing a 10.81% increase in the area of glacial lakes and other water bodies from 2011 to 2024. This growth is linked to climate change, raising the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).

- Regions at Risk: Significant expansion of glacial lakes has been observed in regions such as Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, indicating the need for enhanced monitoring and disaster preparedness.
- Climate Change Impacts: The report attributes the rapid expansion of these lakes to increased glacier melting caused by rising temperatures, which could have severe consequences for downstream communities, infrastructure, and biodiversity.
