    Gujarat Surpasses UP in Attracting Bank Funds for Projects in FY24, Reports RBI Study

    Gujarat attracted funds for 154 projects in FY24, up from 14% in FY23 to 14.7% of the total projects financed by banks and financial institutions (FIs).

    • Record Investment: Total sanctioned project costs reached a record high of Rs 3,90,978 crore (around Rs 4 trillion) in FY24.
    • Uttar Pradesh’s Decline: Uttar Pradesh received funds for 69 projects, decreasing from 16.2% in FY23 to 7.6% of the total funds in FY24, though it remained among the top 5 states.
    • Top States: Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat, along with Uttar Pradesh, were among the top 5 states receiving project funding, with these states together accounting for about 55% of the total sanctioned project cost.
    • Odisha’s Drop: Odisha fell from 3rd place in FY23 (11.8% of total projects cost) to 6th place in FY24 (7.6% of total projects cost).
    • Infrastructure Focus: The study highlighted that the infrastructure sector, particularly ‘Roads & Bridges’ and ‘Power,’ attracted the majority of capital investments, reflecting a strong focus on infrastructure development.

    The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cancelled the Certificate of Registration (COR) of Margdarshak Financial Services Limited (MFSL) based in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

    • As of March 31, 2021, MFSL failed to meet regulatory requirements, including maintaining a Net Owned Fund (NOF) of Rs 5 crore and a Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) of 15%.
    • The company was found to have defaulted on Rs 49.27 crore in repayments and faced significant cash flow issues.
    • With reported losses of Rs 187 crore and net NPAs of Rs 82.37 crore, the company’s ability to continue operations was in question.
    • Under Section 45-1(a) of the RBI Act, 1934, MFSL can no longer operate as a Non-Banking Financial Institution (NBFI).

    Centre Appoints B Srinivasan as New NSG Director General

    The Centre has appointed senior IPS officer B Srinivasan as the new Director General of the National Security Guard (NSG), according to a Personnel Ministry order issued on August 27. Srinivasan, a 1992 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the Bihar cadre, will serve as the NSG DG until August 31, 2027, the date of his superannuation. He is currently the director of Bihar Police Academy, Rajgir.

    B Srinivasan’s appointment follows the exit of Nalin Prabhat, who has been named as the Special Director General of Police in Jammu and Kashmir. Prabhat, also a 1992 batch IPS officer, was initially appointed as NSG Chief in April for a tenure up to August 31, 2028. However, his tenure was cut short, and he has been reassigned to Jammu and Kashmir Police, taking over from R.R. Swain on September 30.

    SBI Projects India’s GDP Growth of 7.0% to 7.1% for Q1 FY 2024-25

    According to State Bank of India (SBI’s) Economic Research Department (ERD) report- ‘Ecowrap’, India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to grow by 7.0% to 7.1% in 1st Quarter (Q1: April-June) of Financial Year 2024-25(FY 25).

    • GDP Growth Projection:
      • Estimated Range: 7.0% to 7.1% for Q1 FY 2024-25 (April-June).
    • Gross Value Added (GVA):
      • Estimated Range: 6.7% to 6.8%, with a downward bias.
    • Corporate Sector Performance:
      • Top-line and Bottom-line Growth: 9% growth reported by around 4,000 listed entities compared to Q1 FY24.
      • Corporate GVA: Increased by approximately 10.9% in Q1 FY25, down from 17% in Q4 FY24 and 26% in Q3 FY24.
    • Agricultural Sector Growth:
      • Estimated Range: 4.5% to 5% in FY25, which is about 30 basis points higher than the RBI forecast.

    Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupendra Yadav has said India has added three more Ramsar sites to the network, taking the tally to 85.

    • Nanjarayan Bird Sanctuary and Kazhuveli Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu and Tawa Reservoir of Madhya Pradesh have been added to the list of India’s Ramsar sites.
    • In a social media post, the Minister said this achievement reflects the emphasis that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid on establishing harmony with nature.

     Prime Minister Modi called this a joyous occasion for India, saying that this indicates the priority government accords to sustainable development as well as living in harmony with nature. He gave compliments to the people of Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. He said his government will continue to be at the forefront of such efforts in the times to come.

    MP govt gives cash to girl students to buy sanitary napkins

    The Dr Mohan Yadav government in Madhya Pradesh has become the first state government in India to provide cash to adolescent girls to buy sanitary napkins. The cash is being provided under the state government’s Sanitation and Hygiene scheme.

    Many state governments in India provide free sanitary napkins to adolescent girls, but none of them give cash to the beneficiaries.

    Main features of the Cash for Sanitary Napkins scheme 

    • School girls from class seventh to twelfth are eligible for these cash benefits.
    • They will get Rs three hundred for one year.
    • The government has transferred more than 57 crore 18 lakh rupees to more than 19 lakh beneficiary girl students.

    Udita Scheme of the Madhya Pradesh Government 

    • The state government launched the Udita Scheme on 1 November 2016 under its Women and Child Development Project to address the myths and taboos related to menstruation. 
    • The Scheme is being implemented through Anganwadi workers and assistants.
    • The first phase of the scheme was implemented in Gwalior, Indore and Badwani and later in all the districts of Madhya Pradesh.
    • Adolescents and women in the age group of 18 to 49 years are eligible under the Udita scheme.

    Aim of the Scheme 

    The aims of the Udita scheme are as follows:

    • To create awareness and educate adolescent girls about the importance of proper hygiene during menstruation and overall menstrual management.
    • dispelling the doubts and myths related to this topic,
    • encourage adolescent girls to use quality sanitary pads, 
    • increase the availability of sanitary pads in villages and increase its  accessibility, 
    • proper disposal of used sanitary napkins
    • create awareness among adolescents about anaemia,

    • provide free sanitary napkins to adolescent girls and women.

    The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) have collaborated to launch ‘One India-One Ticket’ initiative to enhance the travel experience for passengers on Indian Railways and Namo Bharat Trains. It will allow passengers to book Namo Bharat tickets through IRCTC platform with flexible cancellation and payment.

    IRCTC in a statement said that passengers can generate Unique QR code for Namo Bharat train ticket. The code will be valid for 4 days around the journey date options. Namo Bharat tickets can be booked up to 120 days in advance, aligning with the current Railway reservation window.

    The Indian Institute of Technology(IIT) Madras has retained its top spot in the recently released 9th India Rankings report which ranks the High Educational Institutions in India.

    • IIT Madras retained its first position in the Overall Category for the sixth consecutive year, from 2019 to 2024. 
    • The 9th Indian Rankings report was released by the Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan on 12 August 2024 in New Delhi.

    About India Rankings 

    • The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development approved the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2015. The Ministry was later renamed as the Union Ministry of Education.
    • The NIRF outlines a methodology for ranking the country’s higher educational Institutions (HEIs). The HEIs are ranked on five parameters: Teaching, Learning and Resources, Research and Professional Practices, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach and Inclusivity, and Perception.
    • The ministry released the first Indian Ratings of the country’s HEIs in 2016 based on the NIRF.

    Changes in the 9th India Ranking of HEIs

    In the 9th India Ranking, two changes have been made as compared to the 8th edition.
