Gujarat Surpasses UP in Attracting Bank Funds for Projects in FY24, Reports RBI Study

Gujarat attracted funds for 154 projects in FY24, up from 14% in FY23 to 14.7% of the total projects financed by banks and financial institutions (FIs).

• Record Investment: Total sanctioned project costs reached a record high of Rs 3,90,978 crore (around Rs 4 trillion) in FY24.
• Uttar Pradesh’s Decline: Uttar Pradesh received funds for 69 projects, decreasing from 16.2% in FY23 to 7.6% of the total funds in FY24, though it remained among the top 5 states.
• Top States: Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat, along with Uttar Pradesh, were among the top 5 states receiving project funding, with these states together accounting for about 55% of the total sanctioned project cost.
• Odisha’s Drop: Odisha fell from 3rd place in FY23 (11.8% of total projects cost) to 6th place in FY24 (7.6% of total projects cost).
• Infrastructure Focus: The study highlighted that the infrastructure sector, particularly ‘Roads & Bridges’ and ‘Power,’ attracted the majority of capital investments, reflecting a strong focus on infrastructure development.

RBI Cancels Margdarshak Financial Services’ Registration Due to High NPAs and Repayment Defaults

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cancelled the Certificate of Registration (COR) of Margdarshak Financial Services Limited (MFSL) based in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

• As of March 31, 2021, MFSL failed to meet regulatory requirements, including maintaining a Net Owned Fund (NOF) of Rs 5 crore and a Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) of 15%.
• The company was found to have defaulted on Rs 49.27 crore in repayments and faced significant cash flow issues.
• With reported losses of Rs 187 crore and net NPAs of Rs 82.37 crore, the company’s ability to continue operations was in question.
• Under Section 45-1(a) of the RBI Act, 1934, MFSL can no longer operate as a Non-Banking Financial Institution (NBFI).

• Manu Bhaker, who won 2 bronze medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, is the first Indian athlete post-independence to win two medals in the same Olympics.

Centre Appoints B Srinivasan as New NSG Director General

He is currently the director of Bihar Police Academy, Rajgir.

SBI Projects India’s GDP Growth of 7.0% to 7.1% for Q1 FY 2024-25

According to State Bank of India (SBI’s) Economic Research Department (ERD) report- ‘Ecowrap’, India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to grow by 7.0% to 7.1% in 1st Quarter (Q1: April-June) of Financial Year 2024-25(FY 25).

  • Estimated Range: 6.7% to 6.8%, with a downward bias.

Mumbai Ranks 2nd, New Delhi 3rd In Global Property Price Index

Manila ranked first with a 26 per cent annual rise during the quarter. Mumbai and Delhi are at the second and third positions, respectively, among 44 cities globally in annual price rise of prime residential properties during the June quarter, Knight Frank said in a report. India adds three new Ramsar sites to wetlands network, bringing the total to 85

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupendra Yadav has said India has added three more Ramsar sites to the network, taking the tally to 85.

• Nanjarayan Bird Sanctuary and Kazhuveli Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu and Tawa Reservoir of Madhya Pradesh have been added to the list of India’s Ramsar sites.
• In a social media post, the Minister said this achievement reflects the emphasis that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid on establishing harmony with nature.

 Prime Minister Modi called this a joyous occasion for India, saying that this indicates the priority government accords to sustainable development as well as living in harmony with nature. He gave compliments to the people of Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. He said his government will continue to be at the forefront of such efforts in the times to come.

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s joint silver medal hope came to an end with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, CAS, rejecting her appeal against disqualification from the Paris Olympics.

• The ad-hoc division of the CAS rejected her appeal days after it concluded the hearing in the case.
•  Vinesh Phogat was disqualified after she weighed 100 grams more than her 50-kg weight category on the day of her final gold medal bout.
•  Following this, Phogat approached the CAS for a joint silver medal. In a statement, IOA President PT Usha expressed shock and disappointment at the decision of the CAS. The IOA said that it is exploring the next legal remedy available for Phogat.

Naming of Underwater Geographical Structures in the Indian Ocean

The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO have officially named three underwater geographical structures in the Indian Ocean as Ashoka Seamount, Chandragupt Ridge, and Kalpataru Ridge. Retail Inflation Eases to 5-Year Low of 3.5% in July

India’s retail inflation rate, as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), fell to 3.54% in July, reaching a nearly 5-year low. This decline is attributed to a high base effect and a significant drop in food prices. The inflation rate has dipped below the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) medium-term target of 4% for the first time since August 2019. Despite this, the RBI is expected to maintain its current policy stance.

Food inflation decreased substantially to 5.42% in July from 9.36% in June. Key contributors to this decline include reduced price increases for vegetables (6.83%), cereals (8.14%), fruits (3.84%), milk (2.99%), and sugar (5.22%). However, pulses saw a double-digit rise of 14.8%, and protein-rich items like eggs (6.76%) and meat and fish (5.97%) experienced higher inflation.

MP govt gives cash to girl students to buy sanitary napkins

The Dr Mohan Yadav government in Madhya Pradesh has become the first state government in India to provide cash to adolescent girls to buy sanitary napkins. The cash is being provided under the state government’s Sanitation and Hygiene scheme.

Many state governments in India provide free sanitary napkins to adolescent girls, but none of them give cash to the beneficiaries.

Main features of the Cash for Sanitary Napkins scheme 

• School girls from class seventh to twelfth are eligible for these cash benefits.
• They will get Rs three hundred for one year.
• The government has transferred more than 57 crore 18 lakh rupees to more than 19 lakh beneficiary girl students.

Udita Scheme of the Madhya Pradesh Government 

• The state government launched the Udita Scheme on 1 November 2016 under its Women and Child Development Project to address the myths and taboos related to menstruation. 
• The Scheme is being implemented through Anganwadi workers and assistants.
• The first phase of the scheme was implemented in Gwalior, Indore and Badwani and later in all the districts of Madhya Pradesh.
• Adolescents and women in the age group of 18 to 49 years are eligible under the Udita scheme.

One India-One Ticket’ to boost tourism

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) have collaborated to launch ‘One India-One Ticket’ initiative to enhance the travel experience for passengers on Indian Railways and Namo Bharat Trains. It will allow passengers to book Namo Bharat tickets through IRCTC platform with flexible cancellation and payment.

IRCTC in a statement said that passengers can generate Unique QR code for Namo Bharat train ticket. The code will be valid for 4 days around the journey date options. Namo Bharat tickets can be booked up to 120 days in advance, aligning with the current Railway reservation window.

• The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development approved the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2015. The Ministry was later renamed as the Union Ministry of Education.
• The NIRF outlines a methodology for ranking the country’s higher educational Institutions (HEIs). The HEIs are ranked on five parameters: Teaching, Learning and Resources, Research and Professional Practices, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach and Inclusivity, and Perception.

10th bilateral Mitra Shakti Military Exercise Commences in Sri Lanka

The 10th annual Mitra Shakti military exercise between the Indian Army and the Sri Lankan Army began on August 12, 2024, at the Sri Lankan Army Training School in Maduru Oya. The exercise will run until August 25.

• Objective: The exercise aims to strengthen military-to-military ties and bilateral relations between India and Sri Lanka, focusing on anti-terrorist operations in urban areas.
• Historical Context: Initiated in 2012, the Mitra Shakti exercise alternates between India and Sri Lanka. The 2024 edition marks the 10th iteration, following the 9th edition held in Pune, India, in 2023.
• Participants: This year, the Rajputana Rifles from India and the Gajaba Regiment from Sri Lanka are participating. The exercise involves each side deploying one Infantry Battalion, three Armoured Tanks, four BMP tanks, five to ten Artillery observers, and fifty Engineers personnel.

Phases of the Exercise:

1. Phase One: Static display and demonstration of weapons and equipment by both sides.
2. Phase Two: Training and rehearsals, including night training.
3. Phase Three: Sports competition to foster friendship and camaraderie.
