12. “IRCON International to Commence Railway Upgradation on Sri Lanka’s Northern Line”
IRCON International Limited is set to begin railway upgradation work on the northern line of Sri Lanka Railways from January 7, 2024.
The railways department has announced the temporary suspension of train services between Colombo and Jaffna due to the track upgrade work.
IRCON completed the first phase of the upgrade on the 48 km Anuradhapura-Omanthai section of the northern line earlier this year.
The 2nd phase of the scheduled maintenance work will cover the 65 km Maho-Anuradhapura section, with a total project cost of $91.27 million.
The maintenance work is expected to be completed within six months, starting on January 7.
IRCON will rebuild the railway line from the bottom up, including new ballast and welded tracks, enabling faster and smoother travel without jerks.
The upgraded track will allow trains to run at speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour and eliminate several speed restrictions.
The upgrade aims to enhance connectivity from Colombo to Jaffna, providing seamless and comfortable travel for residents of the northern province to the capital.
