Centre Introduces 160 Number Series for Service and Transactional Calls

  • The Centre has introduced a new numbering series, 160xxxxxxx, for making service or transactional calls. This move aims to help citizens easily identify legitimate calls and curb unsolicited voice calls from telemarketers using 10-digit mobile numbers.
  • Objective: To help citizens identify legitimate calls and reduce unsolicited telemarketing calls.
  • Current Scenario: The 140xxxxxxx series is overused for promotional purposes, causing important calls to be ignored.
  • Implementation: Telecom Service Providers (TSP) must verify entities before assigning 160 series numbers.
  • Exclusive Use: Numbers in the 160 series are solely for service and transactional calls.
  • Examples: Calls from financial entities like RBI, SEBI, PFRDA, and IRDA will start with 1601.

India Sets World Record with 64.2 Crore Voters in Lok Sabha Polls: CEC Rajiv Kumar

  • India achieved a world record with 64.2 crore voters participating in the Lok Sabha polls.
  • Comparison to G7 Countries: The voter count is 1.5 times the combined voters of the G7 countries (US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Canada).
  • Women Voters: 31.2 crore women cast their votes, the highest number of female voters ever in the world.
  • Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Polls: The Election Commission will soon start the poll process in Jammu and Kashmir.

MoU Signed Between School Education Department and National Book Trust for Rashtriya e-Pustakalaya

  • The Department of School Education signed an MoU with the National Book Trust to establish an institutional framework for the Digital Library Platform, Rashtriya e-Pustakalaya.
  • Accessibility: Secretary of the Department of Higher Education, K. Sanjay Murthy, highlighted that Rashtriya e-Pustakalaya will be accessible round-the-clock, irrespective of readers’ geographic locations, thereby enhancing accessibility to books.
  • Addressing Challenges: Mr. Murthy emphasized that Rashtriya e-Pustakalaya will address the challenge of last-mile presence of libraries in many states, ensuring that readers have access to a wide range of books.
  • Expansion Plans: He expressed optimism that in the next 2-3 years, Rashtriya e-Pustakalaya will feature over 10 thousand books in more than 100 languages, catering to diverse readership needs.

Hyderabad belongs to Telangana, no longer Andhra Pradesh Capital

  • The city of Hyderabad officially ceases to be the joint capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on 2 June 2024. 
  • On 2 June 2014, Hyderabad was made the joint capital of Andhra Pradesh and the newly created state of Telangana for ten years. Telangana was created as the 29th state of India by bifurcating Andhra Pradesh in 2014.

Status of Hyderabad

  • The state of Telangana was created by the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2014, passed by the parliament under Article 3 of the constitution. 
  • Under this act, Hyderabad, the capital of united Andhra Pradesh, was given to Telangana. Section  5 (1) of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2014 provided that Hyderabad would remain the common capital of both states for a period of ten years, starting 2 June 2014.
  • Section 5(2) of the act provides that a new capital will be established for Andhra Pradesh after this period, and Hyderabad will become the sole capital of Telangana.

Andhra Pradesh’s Capital Dynamics

  • Selection of Amaravati: Following the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2014, a committee led by K.C. Sivaramakrishnan recommended Amravati as the new capital of Andhra Pradesh.
  • Establishment of Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly passed the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority Act (APCRDA), 2014, under Chandrababu Naidu’s tenure, making Amaravati the state’s new capital.
  • Change in Government, Change in Plans: With the change in government in 2019, Jagan Mohan Reddy’s administration initiated a revaluation of the capital plan.
  • Decentralization Bill: The Andhra Pradesh assembly repealed the APCRDA Act, 2014, and passed the AP Decentralisation and Inclusive Development of All Regions Bill, 2020.
  • Three Capitals: The new bill proposed Visakhapatnam as the executive capital, Amravati as the legislative capital, and Kurnool as the judicial capital, aiming to foster balanced regional development and inclusivity across the state.

May 2024: India’s GST Revenue Hits ₹1.73 Trillion, Records 10% YoY Growth

  • In May 2024, India’s GST revenue surged to ₹1.73 trillion, marking a significant 10% year-on-year growth.
  • The growth was propelled by a robust 15.3% rise in domestic transactions, offsetting a slight 4.3% dip in imports.
  • Net GST Revenue: After factoring in refunds, the net GST revenue for May 2024 stood at ₹1.44 trillion, demonstrating a 6.9% growth compared to the same period last year.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Trends in India FY24

  • Singapore emerged as the largest investor in India in FY24, followed by Mauritius, USA, Netherlands, Japan, UAE, Germany, and Cayman Islands.
  • FDI Equity Inflows: Decreased by 3.5% in FY24, from USD 46.03 billion to USD 44.42 billion, attributed to global economic uncertainties.
  • Total FDI: Experienced a negligible decrease of 1%, from USD 71.35 billion in FY23 to USD 70.95 billion in FY24.

    • This website is dedicated to promoting financial literacy. It provides customers with information, knowledge, and guidance on policies governing services.
    • It also provides information on the road map for addressing and resolving complaints.
  • Using this website, customers can register complaints and within 5 days, they will receive information on regulatory guidelines.

Claudia Sheinbaum: First elected Woman President of Mexico

  • Mexico has elected a woman president for the first time in its 200-year history. According to the provisional result of the Mexican election commission, Claudia Sheinbaum has taken an unassailable lead over her nearest presidential rivals.
  • Mexican President and mentor of Claudia Sheinbaum , Andrés Manuel López Obrador, congratulated Claudia on her victory.
  • Elections were held on 2 June 2024 in Mexico to elect a new president and more than 20,000 political positions, including all seats in the lower house and the senate of the Mexican Parliament and regional and municipal offices.
  • She will be sworn in as the President of Mexico on 1 October 2024.

  • She served as India’s PR to the UN in New York, the United States of America (USA) from August 2022 to June 2024.

  • Ruchira Kamboj is a Indian Foreign Service (IFS) Offier of 1987 batch. She started her diplomatic career as the 3rd Secretary in India’s Embassy to France(1989 to 1991).
  • From 1991-96, she served as Under Secretary in the Europe West Division of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India (GoI).

  • The Spanish football giant Real Madrid defeated Borussia Dortmund, the German football club, 2-0 in the final to win the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League for the 15th time.
  • This also marks the end of the European domestic professional football season 2023-24.
  • The 2023-24 UEFA Champions League final was played at Wembley, England, on 1 June 2024. This was the third Champions League final to be hosted by Wembley Stadium, having hosted the 2011-12,2013-14 and 2023-24 editions.

  • While Jasmine, in the women’s 57 kg category defeated Marine Camara of mali, with an easy 5- nil quarter-final victory.
  • Besides Amit and Jasmine, four other Indian pugilists have also qualified for the Paris Olympics so far.  This includes Nishant Dev, Nikhat Zareen, Preeti Pawar and the Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain.
