  • The tribe resides in the dense tropical rainforests of the Great Nicobar island.
  • Seven members of the Shompen tribe participated in the election, marking their inaugural involvement in the democratic process.
  • The Shompen population is estimated at 229 individuals based on 2011 Census data.
  • Voter turnout in the Andaman and Nicobar Lok Sabha constituency was 63.99%, slightly lower than the 2019 elections’ turnout of 65.09%.

First BJP Candidate to Win Lok Sabha Poll Unopposed: Mukesh Dalal

  • Mukesh Dalal, representing the BJP, secures victory in the Lok Sabha election without facing any opposition, a rare occurrence in Indian electoral history.
  • His triumph from the Surat parliamentary constituency marks the first instance in 12 years of a candidate winning unopposed.
  • Notably, this victory is also the first time a BJP candidate wins a parliamentary poll without any opposition.
  • Mr. Dalal emerges as the sole contestant for the Surat Lok Sabha seat after all other nominees withdraw from the race.
  • The candidature of the Congress party’s Nilesh Kumbhani was rejected due to discrepancies in the signature of the proposers by the district returning officer.
  • Since 1951, there have been at least 34 instances of individuals winning parliamentary elections without facing any opposition, including Mr. Dalal’s recent victory in the 18th Lok Sabha.
