Significant Growth in SC Student Enrollment in Higher Education

  • Sanjiv Puri replaces R Dinesh, Chairman of TVS Supply Chain Solutions as the President of CII. Rajiv Memani has been appointed as the new President-Designate, and R Mukundan has been elected as the new Vice President of the CII for 2024-2025

Zverev and Swiatek Win Singles Titles at 2024 Italian Open:

  • German tennis player Alexander Zverev clinched his second Italian Open title by defeating Nicolas Jarry of Chile in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 in the 2024 final.
  • The 2024 Italian Open title is also Zverev’s eighth Masters 1000 title in his career, adding to his accomplishments, including a Tokyo Olympic gold medal.

Iga Swiatek wins her 3rd Italian Open title

  • World no.1 Iga Swiatek of Poland defeated Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus in straight sets 6-2 6-3 to win her 21st career title.
  • This was the third Italian Open title for Iga Swiatek in the last four years. Last year she failed to qualify for the final.

  • The 81st Italian Open was held in Rome, the capital of Italy, from 6 -19 May, 2024.The Italian Open is for both men’s and women’s tennis players.
  • The Italian Open is the ATP Masters 1000 championship for the men’s and is a WTA 1000 event for the women’s tennis title.
  • It is one of the three Masters 1000 championships which is played on clay. Rafael Nadal of Spain has won the Italian open titles a record 10 times. 

Thailand Open: Satwiksairaj & Chirag Shetty wins 2nd title of 2024

  • The world no 3 ranked Indian badminton pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won the Thailand Open 2024 badminton men’s doubles title by defeating the Chinese duo of Chen Bo Yang and Liu Yi in the final played on May 2024.
  • The Indian pair defeated the world’s 29th-ranked Chinese pair 21-15, 21-15, in 46 minutes in the final at the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
  • The Thailand Open was held in Bangkok from 14 to 19 May 2024.

Nikhat, Meenakshi bag Gold, India finish with 12 Medals: Elorda Cup

  • Two-time world champions Nikhat Zareen and Minakshi won two gold medals for India in the 3rd Elorda Cup 2024. The Indian contingent finished the Elorda Cup with 12 medals—2 gold, 2 silver, and 8 bronze. The 3rd Elorda Cup was held in Kazakhstan’s capital city of Astana.
  • A 21-member strong boxing contingent was sent by the Boxing Federation of India to participate in the 3rd Elorda Cup. 

Gold for Nikhat and Minakshi 

  • India’s no.1 female boxer Nikhat Zareen defeated Kazakhstan’s Zhazira Urakbayeva 5-0 in the final to win her gold medal at the Elroda Cup. Nizamabad, Telangana born Nikhat Zareen was competing in the 52 kg category.
  • In another final, Hisar, Haryana’s Minakshi, eliminated Uzbekistan’s 20-year-old Saidakhon Rakhmonova 4-1 in the 48 kg category to win the first gold medal in the competition for India.
