IFC Supports HDFC Bank with $500 Million for Women’s Microfinance: Empowering Livelihood Initiatives

  • The International Finance Corporation (IFC) extends a $500 million loan to HDFC Bank to finance microloans for women borrowers.
  • HDFC Bank intends to allocate the funds towards women’s self-help groups (SHGs) and joint liability groups (JLGs) involved in sustainable livelihood initiatives.
  • Microfinance in India, primarily facilitated by non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) and small finance banks, often entails higher interest rates for SHGs and JLGs.
  • HDFC Bank’s access to cheaper funds through CASA deposits enables the provision of more affordable loans, promoting financial inclusion and empowering women entrepreneurs.

What is Microfinance?

Microfinance refers to the financial service provided to the poor and low-income individuals or groups living in the rural, semi-urban and urban areas, not served by the traditional banking system. 

Microfinance has been designed as an economic tool to promote financial inclusion, enable the poor and low-income households to come out of poverty and improve their living standards. Microfinance is a holistic term which provides a variety of financial services, like 

  • micro-credit, 
  • promotion of saving and thrift habits by opening bank accounts, 
  • provision of micro insurance facilities, 
  • provision of micro pension facilities and 
  • Micro fund transfer facilities and counselling. 

International Finance Corporation (IFC) 

International Finance Corporation is a part of the World Bank Group and was set up in 1956. It does not provide loans to the government but to the private sector.  It invests in the shares and the debt instruments of private companies.

SBI General Unveils ‘Surety Bond Bima’ for Infrastructure Projects

  • SBI General Insurance, the non-life insurance arm of State Bank of India (SBI), has launched ‘Surety Bond Bima’ to support infrastructure development by providing a security arrangement for infrastructure projects.

Purpose and Function: This product, developed in line with the government’s vision to upscale infrastructure, offers protection against breaches by contractors during both the bidding and performance stages of projects. It insulates both the contractor and the principal (contract awarding authority) from potential risks.

Range of Bonds The Surety Bond Insurance includes various types of bonds such as bid bonds, advance payment bonds, performance bonds, and retention money bonds. These bonds cater to a diverse group of contractors operating in today’s volatile environment.

Variants

  • Conditional Bonds: Pay a specified sum to the beneficiary upon claim when specific conditions are met.
  • Unconditional Bonds: Allow the beneficiary to claim the money with minimal conditions.

Bank of Maharashtra tops among PSU banks in business growth in FY24

  • Bank of Maharashtra recorded the highest growth rate last fiscal in terms of total business and deposit mobilisation among public sector lenders at a time when most banks are facing difficulty in achieving double-digit growth.
  • The bank has registered a 15.94 per cent rise in the total business (domestic) in FY24, followed by State Bank of India (SBI) with 13.12 per cent growth.
  • However, SBI’s total business (deposit and advances) was about 16.7 times higher at ₹79,52,784 crore compared to ₹4,74,411 crore of Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) in absolute terms.
  • Similarly, BoM continued to maintain its top spot in terms of growth in deposit mobilisation, with a 15.66 per cent rise in FY24.
  • It was followed by SBI (11.07 per cent), Bank of India (11.05 per cent) and Canara Bank (10.98 per cent).
