India grants $ 1 million humanitarian assistance to flood hit Kenya

  • India pledges $1 million in humanitarian aid to Kenya to address flood devastation, with over 267 casualties and 380,000 displaced.
  • Indian Air Force dispatches 22 tons of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief items, including sanitary utilities, hygiene kits, tents, sleeping bags, blankets, power generation sets, and ready-to-eat meals.
  • Additionally, 18 tons of medical aid, containing life-saving drugs and surgical equipment for critical care and wound management, are sent to provide emergency medical relief.

IndiaSkills 2024: Nation’s Premier Skill Competition

  • IndiaSkills 2024, the largest skill competition in the nation, commenced in New Delhi on May 15, 2024, and will run for four days.
  • Held at Yashobhoomi, Dwarka, New Delhi, the event will feature competitions across 61 categories, testing the skills of students from across India.
  • Organized by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), under the Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE).
  • Supported by state governments, industry, Sector Skill Councils (SSCs), State Skill Development Missions (SSDMs), corporates, and partner institutes.
  • Offers a platform for youth to showcase their talents at both national and international levels.

Special Commemorative Coin Released on MDL Shipyard’s 250th Anniversary

  • Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane unveils a commemorative Rs 250 coin to mark the 250th anniversary of Mazagaon Dock Limited (MDL).
  • MDL, established in 1774 as a dry dock in Mumbai, was nationalized by the government of India in 1960 and is now a premier naval shipyard under the Union Ministry of Defence.
  • Awarded Mini-Ratna 1 status in 2006, MDL specializes in building warships, submarines, and various vessels for the Indian Navy and Coast Guard.
  • Notable projects include the construction of the Sagar Samrat offshore oil platform for ONGC and being the sole Indian shipbuilding yard for constructing submarines since 1960.
  • MDL’s extensive portfolio comprises 801 vessels, including warships, submarines, cargo ships, passenger ships, and more, serving both domestic and international clients.

Who issues Coins in India?

  • Under the Coinage Act 1906(last amended in 2011), the government of India has the power to issue coins and Re 1 notes. However, RBI is responsible for circulating coins minted by the government in the market through banks.
  • Under the Reserve Bank of India Act 1934, the RBI has the power to issue currency notes in denominations of Rs 2 to Rs 10,000.
  • The government of India can issue coins in the denomination of 50 paise to Rs 1000.
  • Coins up to 50 paise are called ‘small coins‘, and coins of Rupee one and above are called ‘Rupee Coins’.

Commemorative Coins 

  • Commemorative coins are issued by the government of India to mark some special events.
  • Commemorative coins have a distinct design which highlights the occasion on which they are issued.  
  • Commemorative coins are issued for collection purposes and are not legal tender unless the government notifies them.
  •  Legal tender means they can be used to purchase goods and services from the market.
  • The first commemorative coin in India, bearing the image of Jawaharlal Nehru, was issued in 1964 to commemorate his birth anniversary.

  • This three-week exercise involved intense training and mock drills in urban counter- terrorism scenarios.
