India’s Debut: Pavilion at World Hydrogen Summit

  • India marks its presence at the World Hydrogen Summit 2024 with its inaugural pavilion.

  • The Summit in Rotterdam, Netherlands, convenes 15,000 delegates globally, advocating for green hydrogen technology and fuel.

World Hydrogen Summit and Exhibition 2024

  • The World Hydrogen Summit and Exhibition has been organised by the Sustainable Energy Council in partnership with the Netherlands government, the province of Zuid-Holland, the City of Rotterdam and the Port of Rotterdam.
  • The 2024 World Hydrogen Summit and Exhibition is the largest global green hydrogen event which seeks to promote the use of green hydrogen technology and green hydrogen based fuel in the world.

UN Proclaims 25th May as World Football Day

  • United Nations General Assembly designates 25th May annually as World Football Day, passed by consensus on May 2024.
  • Libyan Ambassador Taher El-Sonni introduces the resolution, co-sponsored by over 160 UN members, highlighting football’s global popularity and significance.
  • Resolution aims to celebrate football’s universal appeal and promote unity through sport across nations and communities.

Why was 25 May chosen?

  • On 25 May 1924 all the regions of the world were represented in the 1924 Paris Summer Olympics football event. This year the Summer Olympics is being held in Paris and 25 May 2024 will mark the 100th anniversary of the 1924 football event.
  • To celebrate the momentous event, the United Nations unanimously accepted to celebrate 25 May as the World Football Day.

Football and Olympics 

  • Football was introduced in the Paris Summer Olympics in 1900. Initially only men’s football team were allowed to play in the Summer Olympics.
  • Women’s football was introduced at the Atlanta Summer Olympics in1996.
  • Football has been a permanent feature of the Summer Olympics except in 1932.

SBI Becomes First Indian Bank to Act as Trading-cum-Clearing Member at IIBX

  • State Bank of India (SBI) achieves the milestone of being India’s first bank to serve as a Trading-cum-Clearing Member (TCM) at India International Bullion Exchange IFSC Limited (IIBX) in GIFT City, Gandhinagar.
  • This authorization allows SBI’s International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) Banking Unit (IBU) to engage in trading activities on the IIBX platform.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) granted permission in February 2024 for Indian bank branches in GIFT-IFSC to function as Trading Members (TM)/Trading and Clearing Members (TCM) of IIBX, enabling them to import Gold or Silver as Special Category Clients (SCCs) through IIBX.

Bank of India Partners with Indian Coast Guard for “BOI Rakshak Salary/Pension Savings Scheme”

  • Bank of India (BOI) collaborates with Indian Coast Guard (ICG) to introduce “BOI Rakshak Salary/Pension Savings Scheme” offering a zero balance requirement.
  • Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed at ICG Headquarters in New Delhi, attended by key figures including Narendra Singh, DIG and Principal Director (Administration), ICG, and Sharda Bhushan Rai, CGM, BOI.
  • Scheme extends benefits to all ranks of ICG, veterans, recruits, and ex-servicemen, providing comprehensive insurance coverage including Personal Accidental, Air Accidental, Permanent Total Disability, and Partial Disability covers.

  • Achieved the milestone after needing just one win and eight draws before the tournament’s commencement.

What is a Grandmaster or International Master in Chess?

Grandmaster or International Masters is one of the many chess titles which is awarded by the world chess governing body FIDE. FIDE awards four titles to the men and women’s chess players around the world. It is a lifelong title and can be used by the chess players.

Grandmaster

  • Grandmaster is the highest title in chess, just below the world champion title. 
  • male chess player must earn at least a FIDE 2500 Elo rating point in established classical or standard chess and three Grandmaster’s norms in international competition.
  • For the women chess player, the player has to earn a minimum FIDE 2300 ELO rating points and three women Grandmaster’s norm.

Chess Grandmaster of India

  • Manuel Aaron was the first Indian chess player to get the International Master title in 1961.
  • Vishwanathan Anand was the first Indian to become the Grandmaster in 1988.
  • Jayshree Khadikar was the first Indian woman to get the Women International Master in 1979.
  • Koneru Humpy was the first women Grandmaster of India. She is also the world’s youngest female player ever to become women GM, at the age of 15 years.
  • There are three female Indian Grandmasters Koneru Humpy, Dronavalli Harika and R. Vaishali.
