Indian Coast Guard Partners with Hindalco for Indigenous Marine-Grade Aluminium Supply

  • Indian Coast Guard and Hindalco Industries sign MoU for manufacturing and supply of marine-grade aluminium for ship construction.
  • Aim to enhance coastal security with more vessels capable of operating in shallow waters. 67 ships in Indian Coast Guard fleet currently utilize aluminium hull.
  • MoU ensures benefits like quarterly pricing, priority in supplies, and turnover discount.

New Inter-Services Organisations Act Notified by Defence Ministry

  • The Inter-Services Organisations (Command, Control and Discipline) Act has been notified by the Defence Ministry.
    • The bill was passed by both Houses of Parliament during the previous Monsoon Session.
  • Objective: Aimed at bolstering effective command, control, and efficient functioning of Inter-Services Organisations (ISOs).
  • Empowerment of Commanders: The Act empowers Commanders-in-Chief and Officers-in-Command of ISOs to exercise control over Service personnel. Ensures effective maintenance of discipline and administration without disturbing the unique service conditions of each individual Service.
  • Importance: Enhances the ability of Commanders to maintain discipline and streamline administration within ISOs. Facilitates smoother decision-making processes and more efficient utilization of resources.

IREDA incorporates “IREDA Global Green Energy Finance IFSC Limited” in GIFT City, Gujarat

  • Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd. (IREDA) has incorporated a wholly owned subsidiary in the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) located in GIFT City, Gujarat.
  • The subsidiary was officially incorporated as “IREDA Global Green Energy Finance IFSC Limited”.
  • In February 2024, the Reserve Bank of India gave its No Objection letter to set up the finance company in IFSC GIFT City.
  • This subsidiary not only positions IREDA to extend its global reach but also acts as an offshore platform for securing competitive funding to drive the renewable energy sector’s growth, aligning with the Government of India’s ambitious ‘Panchamrit’ targets.

India sign Moldova pact on visa waiver on diplomatic and official passports

  • India and Moldova signed an agreement on visa waiver for diplomatic and official passports.
  • The agreement will allow holders of diplomatic and official passports of either country to travel to the other, without a visa.
  • The agreement will add further momentum to ties between India and Moldova.
  • Diplomatic relations between India and Moldova were established on March 20, 1992.
  • The ties between India and Moldova are warm, stable and friendly.

New Marine Species named after Chandrayaan 3

  • A new species of marine tardigrade discovered from the southeast coast of Tamil Nadu has been named Batillipes chandrayaani after the Chandrayaan-3 moon mission by researchers at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat).
  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is credited with the first landing near the south pole of the moon.
  • Tardigrades are microscopic marvels commonly known as ‘water bears,’ although they have no relation to actual bears.
  • Similar in size to other tardigrades, it grows to a length of 15 millimetres and 0.04 millimetres in width.
  • It has a trapezoid-shaped head and four pairs of legs with sharp-tipped sensory spines.

Bajrang Punia Suspended by UWW

  • United World Wrestling (UWW), the global governing body for wrestling, has provisionally suspended Bajrang Punia until December 31, 2024.
  • This suspension comes as a result of action taken by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) of India against Punia.

Reason for Suspension: Bajrang Punia was provisionally suspended by NADA on April 23, 2024. The primary reason behind this suspension was Punia’s refusal to provide his sample for an anti-doping test.

Implications of Suspension: Bajrang Punia’s suspension by UWW puts his participation in the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics in jeopardy. The suspension prevents him from competing in any UWW-sanctioned events until the end of 2024.

India-French Military Exercise “Shakti 2024” in Meghalaya

    • Opening ceremony to be attended by French Ambassador to India, Thierry Mathou, and other dignitaries including Brigadier Mayur Shekatkar.

Background:

  • Shakti military exercise is a biennial event initiated in 2011, alternating between India and France.
    • The 6th edition took place in France from November 15-26, 2021, making it India’s turn to host the 7th edition.

Aims and Objectives:

  • Aim of the 7th Shakti exercise is to enhance the capacity of both Indian and French forces in joint planning and developing strategies and tactics for combat scenarios.
    • Focus on fostering interoperability and cooperation between the two militaries.

Strategic Significance:

  • Enhances military-to-military cooperation and understanding between India and France.
    • Strengthens bilateral defense ties and facilitates exchange of best practices and expertise.
