National News

Cabinet Ministers of India 2024 in PM Modi 3.0, Check Complete List

The recently concluded 2024 Lok Sabha elections have paved the way for the formation of a new council of ministers under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) unanimously elected Modi as their leader on June 5th, preparations are underway for his swearing-in ceremony, which will be attended by several foreign dignitaries from the neighborhood and Indian Ocean regions.

BJP’s Electoral Performance

  • The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the single largest party in the 18th Lok Sabha, securing 240 seats. This marks a significant decrease from their previous tallies of 303 seats in 2019 and 282 seats in 2014.
  • However, the party’s performance has been sufficient to form the government at the center. The Indian National Congress, the principal opposition party, managed to secure 99 seats.

Composition: In the previous Modi government, after the last reshuffle, the council comprised the Prime Minister and 78 ministers, including 29 Cabinet Ministers3 Ministers of State (Independent Charge), and 47 Ministers of State.

Indian Navy Gets its First Woman Helicopter Pilot

  • Sub Lieutenant Anamika B. Rajeev became the Indian Navy’s first woman helicopter pilot during a passing out parade held in the naval air station INS Rajali at Arakkonam in Ranipet district.
  • A total of 21 officers were awarded the prestigious ‘Golden Wings’ by Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command.
  • A passing out parade was held on June 7 to mark the graduation of the 102nd Helicopter Conversion Course.

Priyanka Jarkiholi Youngest Tribal Woman to Win in Lok Sabha

  • Congress nominee and Minister Satish Jarkiholi’s daughter Priyanka Jarkiholi has won from Chikkodi, defeating incumbent MP and BJP leader Annasaheb Jolle.
  • Priyanka Jarkiholi from Chikkodi became the youngest tribal woman to enter Parliament from an unreserved seat in Karnataka since Independence.
  •  In fact, the BJP has won all the seats in Mumbai Karnataka, except Chikkodi.

  • Priyanka Jarkoli belongs from a politically powerful family. She is one of the three women elected for the Parliament from the state of Karnataka.
  • She is the daughter of Satish Jarkiholi, minister of Public Works Department, Karnataka. Priyanka has done her Masters from the Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University. She also has an MBA.
  • As of June 4, 2024, the day of the Lok Sabha results announcement, she was 27 years and 1 month old and 18 days.

United Nations General Assembly Elects New President and Non-Permanent Security Council Members

  • The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) elected Ambassador Philemon Yang, former Prime Minister (PM) of Cameroon by acclamation, as President for its 79th session starting on 10 September 2024.
  • The UNGA elected Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia as non- permanent members of the UN Security Council (UNSC) for 2-year terms starting on 1 January 2025 and serving till 31 December 2026.

India Exim Bank Opens Nairobi Office to Boost East Africa Trade

  • The Export-Import Bank of India (India Exim Bank) inaugurated its East Africa Representative Office in Nairobi, Kenya, aiming to expand India’s business footprint in the resource-rich and demographically young continent of East Africa.
  • This initiative seeks to enhance trade and investment ties between India, Kenya, and the broader East African region.

Growth in Trade Between India and East Africa: Over the past decade, trade between India and East Africa has surged significantly, with merchandise trade reaching US$12.9 billion in 2022, up from US$9.7 billion in 2013. Notably, India’s exports to East Africa rose from US$8.6 billion in 2013 to US$9.4 billion in 2022, indicating a strengthening of trade relations.

Raj Priy Singh Appointed Director in Department of Rural Development

  • Raj Priy Singh, an Indian Forest Service (IFoS) officer of the 2010 batch, has been appointed as the Director in the Department of Rural Development under the Ministry of Rural Development. 
  • His appointment follows a recommendation for Central deputation by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change and is governed by the Central Staffing Scheme (CSS).

Carlos Alcaraz, Iga Swiatek wins 2024 French Open Tennis Singles title

  • Carlos Alcaraz of Spain and Iga Swiatek of Poland won the 2024 French Open men’s and women’s Tennis Single titles, respectively. It was the first French Open singles title for Alcaraz and the fourth singles title for the world no.1 Iga Swiatek. 
  • The 123rd edition of the French Open, also known as Roland Garros, was held at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France, from 26 May to 9 June 2024.It is the second Grand Slam event of a calendar year after the Australian Open.

  • Dutch-Belgian racing driver Max Verstappen of Red Bull won the Formula 1 (F1) Canadian Grand Prix 2043 (AWS GRAND PRIX DU CANADA 2024) title, the 9th round of the 2024 F1 championships at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
  • McLaren’s Lando Norris finished second, and Mercedes’s George Russell finished third in the Canadian Grand Prix 2023.
  • The victory marks Verstappen’s 60th Formula 1 win and his sixth in nine races this season
  • George Russell achieved Mercedes’s first Grand Prix podium finish for the Formula 1 season 2024.
