India-Taiwan MRA for Organic Products Implemented to boost trade

The India-Taiwan Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) for Organic Products came into effect on 8 July 2024. This was announced at the 9th Working Group on Trade Meeting of Indian and Taiwan in New Delhi. The landmark agreement is likely to give a push to trade in organic products between the two countries.

Objective: Facilitates mutual recognition of organic certifications between India and Taiwan, promoting trade in organic products.

Certification Requirements: Products must adhere to India’s National Programme for Organic Production standards for certification.

Implementing Agencies:

  • India: Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
  • Taiwan: Agriculture and Food Agency, Ministry of Agriculture.

Expected Impact: Boosts exports of Indian organic products like Aromatic and Medicinal Plants, Rice, Tea, etc., to Taiwan.

India’s Organic Farming Status: Second-largest land under organic farming globally, with major production in states like Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Sikkim.

Production Statistics: India produced 3.6 million tonnes of organic products in 2022-23, covering a wide range of food and agricultural categories.

India has no diplomatic ties with Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China. 

However, in 1995, it established a representative office in Taipei.

MoUs Signed by DEPWD for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities

The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (MSJE) signed 2 significant Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), under the guidance of Rajesh Aggarwal, Secretary, DEPwD, to empower persons with disabilities (Divyangjan).

  • The 1st MoU was signed between DEPWD and the “Enable Me” Access Association (EMA) ,and the 2nd MoU was signed between the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Center (ISLRTC) and YUNIKEE.

With these MoUs, DEPWD aims to create an inclusive environment, ensuring equal opportunities in education, employment, and social life for Divyangjan.

Points to Note:

  • YUNIKEE helps organisations build and make products and services accessible for the deaf community in Sign Language.
  • EMA is a Gujarat based not-for-profit organisation (NGO) promoting accessibility and inclusion for all across diverse sectors including Differently Abled, Children, Civic Issues, etc.
  • ISLRTC is an autonomous body under the DEPWD, MSJE.

WHO Launches Medical Devices Information System (MeDevIS)

The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched the ‘Medical Devices Information System’ (MeDevIS), an innovative online platform serving as the first global open access resource for information on medical devices.

  • The MeDevIS platform began operational in March 2024 to facilitate consultation with WHO Member States. It was made available to the public through on July 8 2024.
  • WHO has created the first worldwide repository for medical devices, relying on its experience with the WHO Priority Medical Devices List (MDL) and the WHO Essential Medicines List (EML).

Note: The EML, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025.

About MeDevIS:

  • MeDevIS features information on 2,301 types of medical devices which treat a variety of health conditions, including reproductive, maternal, newborn; non-communicable diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes; and infectious diseases such as COVID 19.
  • The current landscape features disparate sources of information from various international organisations and regulatory bodies, which can be challenging for users to navigate.

PNB Introduces ‘Safety Ring’ Security Mechanism for Online Banking

Punjab National Bank (PNB), India’s leading Public Sector Bank (PSB) has introduced a new security mechanism ‘Safety Ring’ within its Internet Banking System (IBS) and Mobile Banking System (MBS) in response to the increasing number of cyber frauds.

Purpose: Enhances security against cyber frauds in Internet Banking System (IBS) and Mobile Banking System (MBS).

Mechanism:

  • Daily Transaction Limits: Customers can set daily transaction limits for Term Deposits (TDs) online closure or overdraft facilities.
  • Additional Security: Aims to reduce losses from unauthorized access.
  • Limit Setting: Limits can be set via branches or online using IBS/MBS; cancellations only through branches.
  • Protection: Ensures TDs cannot be closed, withdrawn, or used for loans beyond the specified limit.

Mitra Van to be set up in Uttar Pradesh’s 35 border districts

The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has announced a major initiative to establish ‘Mitra Van’ in the 35 districts of the states that share a border with other states, Union Territory and Nepal. Under the Vriksharopan Jan Abhiyan-2024, extensive tree planting will be done to establish ‘Mitra Van’ in these 35 districts.

Along with ‘Mitra Van,’ special forests like ‘Shakti Van,’ ‘Yuva Van,’ and ‘Bal Van’ will also be established in each district under the Vriksharopan Jan Abhiyan 2024.

Who will implement the Plantation Drive?

  • The Uttar Pradesh Forest Department is the nodal agency for implementing the Mitra Van scheme under the Vriksharopan Jan Abhiyan-2024.
  • During the tree plantation programme, the forest department of Uttar Pradesh will coordinate with the representatives of the neighbouring states, UT and Nepal, and engage them in this drive.
  • The forest department will also obtain the opinion of the representatives of neighbouring states, UT and Nepal on the species of trees to be planted and will ensure the availability of the plant species at the forest division. 
  • The location of the sapling plantation is the responsibility of the identified 35 forest divisions, and they will also select the plant species for the plantation to be done.

Target under the Vriksharopan Jan Abhiyan 2024

The forest department has set a target of planting 35 crore saplings in the identified 35 districts, with the planting to be completed by 20 July 2024.

Vietnam Tops Expat Insider 2024 Personal Finance Index; India Ranked 6th

According to the Expat Insider 2024 Survey, for the Personal Finance Index category conducted by InterNations, Vietnam topped the list of most affordable countries for expatriates or immigrants for 4th consecutive term as 86% of expats in the country rated the cost of living positively, 65% are satisfied with the financial situation and 68% considered their household income comfortable enough for survival.

  • While, India was ranked at 6th spot among the top 10 most affordable countries for immigrants in the list.
  • Colombia, a Latin American country has improved its ranking from 7th (in 2023) to 2nd position (2024), followed by Indonesia and Panama ranked at 3rd and 4th position in the list respectively.

2024 World Population Day, Theme and its Background

Every year since 199011 July has been observed as World Population Day around the world. The day seeks to focus the attention of global stakeholders on the issues of population growth, their relations to the environment and development and related issues.

Background to the World Population Day 

  • World Population Day was established by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1989.
  • The date 11 July was chosen as on this date in 1987; the global population was officially declared to have crossed the five billion mark.
  • The first Population Day was observed on 11 July 1990.
  • Later, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in December 1990 to declare 11 July as World Population Day.

Theme of the 2024 World Population Day 

  • The 2024 World Population Day theme is “To Leave No One Behind, Count Everyone”.
  • This year’s theme highlights the importance of collecting, analysing, and using population data to deliver health care globally. 
  • The proper documentation of population data has led to substantial improvements in sexual and reproductive health and the community’s ability to exercise rights and choices.
  • However, according to the United Nations, there are many marginalised communities in the world whose population data are yet not captured, adversely affecting their lives and well-being.

24th National Fish Farmer’s Day (NFFD) Observed on 10 July 2024

The National Fish Farmer’s Day (NFFD) is annually observed across India on 10 July to appreciate the contributions of fish farmers, aquaculture professionals, and stakeholders, underscoring their commitment to sustainable aquaculture. 10 July 2024 marks the observance of the 24th NFFD.

  • The Day 10 July also commemorates the observance of the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) Foundation Day.
  • NFDB was established in 2006 and 10 July 2024 marks the observance of the 18th NFDB Foundation Day.

TN CM Stalin Releases Coffee Table Books on Forts in TN and Indigenous Deities On July 9 2024, Tamil Nadu (TN) Chief Minister (CM) Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin released two English language coffee table books on forts of TN and indigenous deities titled ‘Folk Deities of Tamil Nadu: Worship, Tradition and Custom’ and ‘Forts of Tamil Nadu: A Walk-Through’.

It was released in collaboration with The Hindu Group of Publications at the Secretariat in Chennai, TN.

  • Forts of Tamil Nadu – A Walk – Through was released by the TN Tourism Department, which includes several historic forts in TN and describes what makes them special.
  • Folk Deities of Tamil Nadu: Worship, Tradition and Custom was released by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR & CE) Department to provide historical knowledge and educate readers about the rituals and other cultural practices involving indigenous deities.
  • K. Ramachandran, Minister for Tourism, received the first copy of the book ‘Forts of Tamil Nadu: A Walk-Through’ and P.K. Sekarbabu, Minister for (HR & CE), received the first copy of ‘Folk Deities of Tamil Nadu: Worship, Tradition and Custom’ where Nirmala Lakshman, the Chairperson of The Hindu Group (THG) Publishing Private Limited was also present.
